Chie Kai

Hi, my name is Chie. I am a sophomore in the Fashion Merchandising program. I have my own scene in the 39th GCC fashion show, Ebullition. My scene is Gaiety, which is a happy emotion, meaning the state or quality of being lighthearted or cheerful. I hope to express the innocent and radiant look of children in my scene.

This scene represents children. Children look the most radiant just the way children are,
such as innocent smiles and going their own ways. They are always curious about the world around them and have big dreams to be a princess, a professional athlete and so on. My scene styles are mainly costumes expressing children’s dreams or what they want to do now. I coordinated all of my wonderful models. I selected multiple bright colors to bring a happy feeling, children’s charm and lots of personality across to the audience.

Unfortunately, we can’t hold our fashion show this year due to COVID-19. We have worked hard and spent a lot of time for our fashion show since we became scene coordinators in the fall. We had already made a poster, shared ideas of stage, did model tryouts and selected models. I was contacting many people, and gathering my garments for my scene to have a successful fashion show. Also, many people were willing to support me. Even though I’ve worked a lot, I couldn’t show all my garments that I gathered. I’m so sad. Even after starting remote delivery of the class, we talked about the fashion show many times, what we are doing instead of the fashion show and how we are showcasing our garments. We first tried to do live streaming instead of a physical show, but we ultimately couldn’t because of the worsening situation in America. To be honest, I thought we couldn’t do our fashion show in any way anymore. I’ve known my models are looking forward to participating in our fashion show, so it was very unfortunate that I couldn’t do it. However, we found one way to showcase our fashion show. A lookbook! It’s too bad we can’t hold the fashion show, and I really wanted to show my scene face to face, because I will graduate this semester which means I can’t be a scene coordinator at GCC anymore.

But if I spin this in a positive way, I could experience and be involved in the first challenge of its kind in GCC fashion show history. I’m glad to make the lookbook
and show it to everyone! Also, some of my wonderful models are willing to keep participating and cooperating. I really appreciated it. It was not an easy way to show our garments. There are a lot of stories told in each scene. This lookbook contains a lot of deep feelings of happiness, anger, sadness, and joy like our fashion show theme Ebullition, and we wouldn’t have made it without support. This lookbook is my graduation gift, and I think it’s pretty epic!

I’m from Japan. I was born in Sakai, Osaka, and graduated from Naniwa High School. Private school rules were strict, but everything was an important part of my youth. In five years, I hope to have graduated with my Bachelor’s degree in fashion merchandising, work in the fashion industry, and start building my own fashion
brand. Something to know about me that you’d never think to ask about is that I started playing the piano when I was two years old and have been learning to play the piano until just before studying abroad. I really love fashion, and it increases my energy level. Also, it gives me the opportunity to fully express myself. That’s why I want to work in the fashion industry. Do you
