My scene is Enthusiasm which is in Happiness. I chose this emotion because I design costumes for figure skaters which is sports-related, and sports can connect to happiness. I was also inspired by my sports experience to choose the emotion. Enthusiasm is an essential feeling for the people who play sports, and in my case, figure skate. Enthusiasm motivates us to achieve our goal for the sports and once they are achieved, we feel happiness.
For my design, chiffon and tulle are the main fabrics. As you may know, the skating costume’s skirt is always moving with how skaters turn, step, and jump. Also, to make it gorgeous and sparkly, I used beading and appliqué. The decoration is one of the important points to care about because it gives the costume some shades of expression.
Since the fashion show has been canceled, we have been working on how we could show our looks in different ways. At that time, I did not even know how we could keep working on the fashion show and how to show my costumes. I was confused and frustrated, just like everyone else. I was supposed to do a display in the fashion show, this was in place of a traditional scene. However, now the alternative is going to be a lookbook, and I can now show my display under Enthusiasm. Everyone has been having a hard time and is forced to live under inconvenience. Because college was closed, I could not reach any sewing machine and my work halted. I could not proceed and get anything done until going back to Japan. Even though the situation is difficult and tough, we are doing our best, although it’s impossible to have a traditional fashion show. However, we made an effort and it will be as great an experience as having a traditional fashion show. I am so glad to present my work even in this restricted world.
My name is Manami Horikawa. I am from Japan. I was raised in Katsuura in Chiba which is a really rural side of Japan. In five years, I hope I am working under a figure skating designer continuously who I respect and am trying to work with now. Hopefully, I would move forward to become a freelance designer. Why I want to work in the fashion industry is that I want to make costumes with my creativity which can be an essence for their performance and connect to their confidence. My favorite book is “Earthsea”by Ursula K. LeGuin because the fantasy of Earthsea is well composed and it is good enough to make readers’ imagination overwhelm.
