The scene “Entranced” is inspired by Italy. In the summer of 2019, I took a two week trip to Italy. Within these two weeks I visited Venice, Milan, Florence, Pisa, Rome, Vatican City, and Pompeii. I walked over one hundred miles in those two weeks, going to sleep every night with a body that ached from the walking and the heat. But Italy was worth it all. On every corner of each city, there was a magic that could not have been denied. No two cities were the same as their cultures were all different, despite most of them belonging to the same country.
These cities, through their unique beauty, each had a power to inspire. I went to seven beautiful places across Italy in those two weeks. They were each unique, with their own charms and their own cultures. However, they all created the same feeling within me: entrancement. In every place I was filled with feelings of amazement and joy. From the moment I stepped out of the airport and into the ocean scented air of Venice, Italy, I was entranced. These feelings went on and on – looking out from the roof of the Duomo di Milano, climbing the Leaning Tower of Pisa, standing in the Colosseum at Rome, and even while walking through the heart breaking ruins of Pompeii. There is only one word to describe a scene inspired by such magnificent places: entranced.
Each look is inspired by one of the cities that I visited on my trip to Italy. The garments inspired by Venice are flowy and colorful, not only because of the water and colorful buildings, but also because of the attitude that the people had. Venice was not a place of speed but rather serenity and life. Milan however, has a much more modern atmosphere. Milan is known not for its history, but rather for its metal skyscrapers of modern day. Rome, once again, is known for its history. Rome has two parts to its history; the ancient mythical history, beginning with two twin boys who were raised and nurtured by a she-wolf, later to become the creators of Rome; and its history after it embraced the Roman Cathlic Church. Each garment and look has its own story to tell. And when together, they tell the story of Italy.
-“How coronavirus/the situation effects to the fashion show and/or your scene”
It is not easy to put together a fashion show, or even a single scene for a fashion show. However, COVID-19 has made that task even harder. I have had to trust my abilities and the measurements I have taken while making each garment as I can’t check the garments to my models as easily. My brother was also making one of my pieces in Idaho. Because of the precautions that his school has taken, he didn’t have as much access to the equipment that he needed to finish the garment. COVID-19 has not made this an easy experience by any means.
But it has strengthened my abilities and taught me a lot about trusting in what I can do and using what I have.
